TLDR Reduced Sonic hedgehog signaling leads to increased HPV replication and wart formation.
The study examined the Sonic hedgehog (SHh) signaling pathway's role in condyloma acuminatum (CA) warts, caused by HPV6/11, involving 9 male patients. It found that downregulation of the SHh pathway in keratinocytes from genital warts is linked to G2 phase arrest, which may inhibit HPV replication. This suggests that targeting the SHh pathway could be a potential strategy for developing personalized treatments and preventive measures for CA warts. In vitro experiments further supported that silencing SHh expression increases G2 arrest, indicating that restoring SHh activity might reverse this effect and aid in treating and preventing genital warts.
