TLDR Astrocytes can become stem cell-like and help repair brain damage.
The study investigated the transformation of mouse astrocytes into stem cell-like cells (A-iSCs) through 3D sphere culture, which enhanced their ability to differentiate into neurons. These A-iSCs were transplanted into a mouse model of middle cerebral artery occlusion, where they improved sensorimotor functions and promoted nerve regeneration by expressing neural differentiation markers and growth factors like BDNF and NGF. The study involved 8 mice per group and demonstrated significant functional recovery, suggesting that A-iSCs could be a promising source for neural regeneration and stroke recovery therapies.
