TLDR Pre-sternal keloids are more common in males and can be effectively treated with injections, though recurrences may need more treatment.
This study investigated the treatment of pre-sternal keloids in 47 patients, aged 16 to 70, using intralesional injections of triamcinolone acetonide and hyaluronidase. The study found that pre-sternal keloids are more common in males, with a male-to-female ratio of 2.35:1. After three treatment sessions, patients experienced symptom improvement, including reduced pruritis and pain scores, and a decrease in lesion size, particularly in height. Improvements were also noted in vascularity and pliability scores on the Vancouver Scar Scale. The study concludes that pre-sternal keloids are a distinct entity with unique pathogenesis and clinical presentation, and that the treatment used is effective for symptom relief in patients unwilling to undergo surgery, although recurrences may require further treatment.
