TLDR Isotretinoin effectively treats severe acne but can affect blood and inflammation markers, posing risks for some people.
Systemic isotretinoin is highly effective for treating severe acne by targeting multiple pathogenic factors, but it also has significant systemic effects on hematological, inflammatory, and oxidative stress biomarkers. The drug reduces neutrophil and RBC counts, elevates platelet counts and Hb levels, and alters inflammation markers like IL-8 and CRP. It also disrupts the balance between oxidative stress and antioxidant defenses, as indicated by increased MDA and decreased TAS levels. These effects may pose risks, particularly for susceptible individuals. Future research should aim to understand these mechanisms and develop strategies to minimize adverse effects while maintaining therapeutic benefits.
