TLDR Chemical exfoliants, especially with glycolic acid, are more effective for keratosis pilaris.
This document reviews the composition of cosmetic exfoliants for keratosis pilaris skincare, analyzing 50 body scrubs from pharmacies, online, and specialized stores. It identifies 28 mechanical and 22 chemical exfoliants, with chemical exfoliants containing salicylic or glycolic acid being more effective for reducing transepidermal water loss and enhancing skin exfoliation. The study finds that 62% of products use plastic packaging and categorizes products into three price ranges, with most mechanical exfoliants in the lowest range (up to €15/100 ml or g). The review suggests chemical exfoliants, particularly those with glycolic acid, are potentially effective for keratosis pilaris, but further clinical studies are needed for reliable efficacy assessment.
