TLDR Thyroid hormone and epidermal growth factor affect hair angle, tooth eruption, and ear development in rats.
The study investigated the effects of triiodothyronine (T3) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) on tactile hair development and craniofacial morphogenesis in neonatal rats. Using 36 six-day-old Sprague-Dawley rats, researchers measured the angular displacement of lateral tactile hairs and observed craniofacial development events. T3 and EGF both altered hair growth direction, with T3 reducing and EGF increasing the angular displacement compared to controls. Both hormones accelerated incisor eruption, with T3 having a greater effect. EGF was more effective in accelerating palpebral morphogenesis, while T3 accelerated and EGF retarded external ear development. Both hormones caused similar somatic growth retardation. The study provided quantitative evidence of the distinct and overlapping effects of T3 and EGF on craniofacial development in neonatal rats.
