Formulation and Evaluation of Axillary Cream Preparation of Turmeric Extract (Curcuma Longa Linn.) with Ginger (Zingiber Officinale) Combination as Inhibitor of Hair Growth in Axilla

Meliana Andini, Setia Budi, Yusuf Anggoro Mukti
This study explores the formulation and evaluation of an axillary cream containing turmeric (Curcuma longa Linn.) and ginger (Zingiber officinale) extracts to inhibit hair growth in the axilla. Turmeric's curcumin has antiandrogenic properties that inhibit dihydrotestosterone (DHT) binding to hair follicles, while ginger's gingerol suppresses dermal papilla cell proliferation. The research used a quasi-experimental design with three formulations varying in emulsifier concentrations: stearic acid (10%, 15%, 20%) and triethanolamine (4%, 3%, 2%). Physical evaluations included organoleptic tests, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesion, and emulsion type, with stability tested over 12 days. All formulations showed good physical stability and safe pH levels (4.5–6.5). Viscosity increased with higher stearic acid concentration, while spreadability and adhesion met standards. The oil-in-water emulsion type was consistent across formulations. Formulation II, with 15% stearic acid and 3% triethanolamine, demonstrated the most optimal physical characteristics, suggesting its potential as a herbal cosmetic product.

The user experienced hair loss after initially gaining hair with minoxidil and is now using dutasteride and oral minoxidil alongside topical minoxidil, hoping to regain lost hair. There is uncertainty about the effectiveness of these treatments, with some users suggesting that blocking DHT might help, while others express skepticism about regrowth.

A 23-year-old male experienced initial success with finasteride, topical minoxidil, and ketoconazole for hair loss, but persistent shedding and scalp issues led him to switch to dutasteride without improvement. Users suggest stress management, addressing potential seborrheic dermatitis, and patience with the treatment process.
