TLDR High uric acid can cause health problems, but lifestyle changes can help manage it.
Uric acid (UA) serves as an antioxidant in the body but can lead to health issues like hyperuricemia, which is the second most common metabolic disease after diabetes. Hyperuricemia is linked to conditions such as gout, cardiovascular disease, and potentially prostate cancer. The prevalence of hyperuricemia is significant, with 20.0% of females and 20.2% of males affected in the U.S., and increasing rates in China. Factors like overweight, alcohol abuse, and stress can impair UA breakdown. High UA levels can reduce life expectancy, particularly in men, and are associated with androgenetic alopecia and other health issues. There is no consensus on critical UA levels for treatment, but lifestyle modifications, including dietary changes like consuming Montmorency cherries, are recommended to manage UA levels and reduce health risks.
