TLDR Lower vitamin D levels are linked to higher CRP levels in people with a type of hair loss called alopecia areata.
This pilot study involving 40 patients found a significant inverse correlation between vitamin D and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in individuals with alopecia areata (AA), a type of non-scarring hair loss. Lower vitamin D levels were associated with higher CRP levels, possibly due to vitamin D's immunomodulatory effects. Patients with vitamin D levels under 15 and CRP levels over 16.5 were more likely to develop alopecia universalis, a severe form of AA. However, due to the small sample size, further studies are needed to confirm these findings.
