September 2024 in “AYUSHDHARA” This article discusses the role of Basti therapy, a form of medicated enema in Ayurveda, in treating polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which is a common endocrine and metabolic disorder affecting women of reproductive age. PCOS is characterized by symptoms such as irregular menstrual periods, excess hair growth, acne, infertility, and weight gain, and is associated with two phenotypes: overweight/obese and lean. The article highlights that traditional hormonal treatments for PCOS can have adverse effects, including weight gain and increased risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and carcinoma. In Ayurveda, PCOS is linked to Artavakshaya and Pushpaghani Jatharini, conditions related to menstrual irregularities and pain due to Vata dosha imbalance. Basti therapy, particularly Lekhana Basti, is emphasized as an effective treatment for both lean and obese PCOS, due to its properties of eliminating morbid Dosha and removing increased Mala through its scraping action.
