Cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the production of prostaglandins, which are lipid compounds that perform various functions in the body, such as regulating inflammation, protecting the stomach lining, and maintaining kidney function. Unlike its counterpart COX-2, which is typically induced during inflammation, COX-1 is constitutively expressed, meaning it is produced continuously in most tissues to maintain normal physiological processes.
