Cold sores, also known as fever blisters or herpes labialis, are small, fluid-filled blisters that typically appear on or around the lips. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) and are highly contagious, often spreading through direct contact with an infected person. Cold sores can be triggered by factors such as stress, illness, or sun exposure, and while they usually heal on their own within two to four weeks, antiviral medications can help reduce the severity and duration of outbreaks.
