These cancers typically develop in the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) and are usually caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds. While NMSC is generally less aggressive than melanoma and has a higher survival rate, early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent potential disfigurement and complications.
