    GlossaryPatched Receptor

protein controlling cell growth via Hedgehog signaling pathway

The Patched Receptor is a protein found on the surface of cells that plays a crucial role in regulating cell growth and development. It acts as a gatekeeper in the Hedgehog signaling pathway, which is important for embryonic development and tissue regeneration. When the Hedgehog protein binds to the Patched Receptor, it allows another protein called Smoothened to activate and send signals inside the cell, influencing gene expression. This pathway is also implicated in certain cancers when it malfunctions.
