    GlossaryTight Junctions

specialized cell connections that prevent molecule and ion passage

Tight junctions, also known as occluding junctions or zonula occludens, are specialized connections between adjacent cells in epithelial and endothelial tissues. They create a seal that prevents the passage of molecules and ions through the space between cells, thereby maintaining the distinct environments on either side of the tissue layer. This is crucial for functions such as maintaining the blood-brain barrier and regulating the absorption of nutrients in the intestines.
