August 2026 in “Animal Genetics” This study investigates the development of hair follicles and fur quality in Yongqing Rex rabbits from 1 to 6 months of age, using phenotypic measurements, histomorphology, and transcriptome sequencing. The study involved 10 rabbits per month. Fur thickness showed a pattern of increase, stabilization, and subsequent increase, while coat density peaked at 6 months. Fiber length plateaued after an initial increase, and hair diameter followed an increase-decrease-stabilization pattern. A significant decrease in follicle clusters was observed from 1 to 3 months, with primary hair follicle density highest at 1 month and secondary follicle density increasing continuously. Melanin granules peaked at 4 months. Transcriptomic analysis identified thousands of differentially expressed genes, with significant enrichment in processes like keratinization and the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway. These findings provide insights into the genetic regulation of fur quality in Rex rabbits.
