June 2024 in “Value in Health Regional Issues” This study analyzed the epidemiology, treatment patterns, and healthcare resource utilization of alopecia areata (AA) patients in Taiwan using data from the National Health Insurance Research Database. From 2016 to 2020, the number of AA patients increased from 3,221 to 3,855. The study identified 1,808 mild/moderate and 452 severe patients, revealing that mild/moderate patients predominantly used topical corticosteroids, while severe patients relied more on systemic therapies and oral glucocorticoids. Treatment persistence at 6 months was low across all treatments, and severe patients had more frequent outpatient visits. The study concludes that there is a need for new therapies to alleviate the clinical and economic burden of AA.
