SRD5A3 stands for steroid 5 alpha-reductase 3, an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a more potent androgen. This enzyme is also involved in the biosynthesis of dolichol, which is essential for protein glycosylation, a process important for proper cellular function. Mutations in the SRD5A3 gene can lead to congenital disorders such as SRD5A3-CDG (Congenital Disorder of Glycosylation).
