August 2025 in “Annals of Otology Rhinology & Laryngology” The study compared the effectiveness of topical steroids with antibiotics versus growth factor concentrate in type 1 tympanoplasty for chronic otitis media. Sixty-six patients were divided into two groups of 33 each. Group A received topical steroids and antibiotics, while Group B received growth factor concentrate. After 3 months, Group B showed significantly lower rates of residual perforation (3%) and reperforation (3%) compared to Group A, which had rates of 12.1% and 18.2%, respectively. Although the improvement in the air-bone gap was not statistically significant, growth factor concentrate demonstrated better graft uptake and biocompatibility, suggesting it as a promising option for tympanic membrane repair.
