July 2023 in “International Journal of Trichology” The study evaluated the efficacy of diphenylcyclopropenone (DPCP) in treating 18 patients with alopecia totalis (AT) and alopecia universalis (AU), severe forms of alopecia areata characterized by complete hair loss. After 6 months of treatment, 33.3% of patients experienced more than 75% hair regrowth, while 27.2% showed complete body hair regrowth. Despite 55.5% of patients experiencing side effects such as severe local reactions and pigmentation, these were not severe enough to discontinue treatment. The study suggests that DPCP is a viable treatment option for AT/AU, with significant hair regrowth observed in a subset of patients.
