TLDR People with atopic dermatitis have a higher risk of developing autoimmune diseases.
This systematic review and meta-analysis analyzed data from 26 studies involving 1,629,723 atopic dermatitis (AD) patients and 15,106,889 controls, finding a significant association between AD and various autoimmune diseases such as alopecia areata, celiac disease, and ulcerative colitis. The study highlights that individuals with AD, particularly women, are at a higher risk of developing these conditions. Despite the strong associations found, the study calls for further research due to limitations like the retrospective nature of most studies and the need for larger, prospective studies. It emphasizes the importance of monitoring autoimmune conditions in AD patients for better clinical management and suggests a multidisciplinary approach due to the complex interplay of genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors.
