TLDR Surgery removed ovarian tumors, normalizing testosterone and improving symptoms.
The article presents a case study of a 71-year-old postmenopausal woman with progressive hyperandrogenism due to bilateral ovarian steroid cell tumors (SCT-NOS). Despite normal imaging results, elevated testosterone levels led to a bilateral adnexectomy, which confirmed the presence of SCT-NOS tumors. Post-surgery, the patient's androgen levels normalized, and symptoms such as hirsutism and androgenic alopecia improved significantly. This case emphasizes the importance of considering SCT-NOS in the differential diagnosis of severe hyperandrogenism in postmenopausal women, even when imaging is inconclusive, and highlights the need for histological confirmation and a multidisciplinary approach for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
