Dermatological Aspects of Gender Affirming Medical Treatment in Transgender and Gender Diverse People: A Systematic Review

Jon Arcelus, Kamilla Kamaruddin, Walter Pierre Bouman
TLDR Transgender individuals may face specific skin issues during gender-affirming treatments, needing personalized care.
The systematic review highlights that transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals undergoing gender affirming medical treatment (GAMT) may experience specific dermatological conditions such as acne, androgenic alopecia, xerosis, pruritus, persistent hirsutism, atopic dermatitis, and melasma. Additionally, those undergoing surgical treatments are at risk for hypertrophic scars and keloids. The review, which included 22 studies, emphasizes the need for healthcare professionals, including dermatologists, to recognize and address these conditions to improve the quality of life and mental health of TGD patients. It provides guidance and recommendations for tailored prevention and treatment strategies, moving away from a universal approach.
