TLDR Minoxidil and nebivolol can help prevent aortic aging in diabetic mice.
The study investigates the effects of minoxidil and nebivolol on elastogenesis and elastolysis in diabetic db/db mice, aiming to reduce premature aging of the aortic wall. By treating these mice with the antihypertensive agents, researchers observed stimulation of elastogenesis and inhibition of elastolysis, which restored functional elastic fibers and brought blood pressure levels closer to normal. The treatments work by opening ATP-sensitive potassium channels and regulating the forkhead box transcription factor (FOXO1). The findings suggest that monitoring these pathways could help limit aortic aging and reduce hypertension, atherosclerosis, and aneurysms in diabetic patients.
