TLDR Androgenetic alopecia is linked to factors like age, family hair loss history, diet, and health conditions.
This study examined 1,505 patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and 1,751 healthy controls to identify factors associated with different BASP subtypes. It found that AGA is more common in males, older individuals, smokers, and those with a family history of hair loss. Other associated factors include higher BMI, shorter shampooing intervals, scalp oiliness, high-fat diets, heart disease, hyperlipidemia, fatty liver, lower serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels, and higher homocysteine levels. Subtype-specific associations were also identified, such as male sex for M-, U-, and F-types, and drinking for U-, F-, and V-types. The study highlights the importance of demographic, familial, lifestyle, and metabolic factors in AGA and suggests the need for personalized treatment strategies. However, the study's retrospective, single-center design limits its generalizability, and further research is needed to confirm these findings.
