TLDR Men's fertility and sexual health decline with age, with reduced testosterone and virility, and many lose fertility by their eighties.
The document reviewed the effects of aging on male fertility and sexual health, noting that while spermatogenesis can continue into old age, about 50% of men in their eighties experienced complete loss of fertility. Aging in men was characterized by a decline in Leydig cells, leading to altered sex hormone levels and impaired pituitary-gonadal feedback, with increased LH and FSH levels and reduced testosterone bioavailability. Men over 60 showed signs of reduced virility, such as decreased muscle mass, strength, and libido. The study suggested androgen supplementation could be beneficial, but highlighted the need for more research and long-term risk-benefit studies, particularly concerning partial androgen deficiency in aging males (PADAM).
