TLDR Growth factor concentrate is more effective than topical steroids with antibiotics for tympanic membrane repair.
The study compared the effectiveness of topical steroids with antibiotics versus growth factor concentrate in type 1 tympanoplasty for chronic otitis media. Sixty-six patients were divided into two groups of 33 each. Group A received topical steroids and antibiotics, while Group B received growth factor concentrate. After 3 months, Group B showed significantly lower rates of residual perforation (3%) and reperforation (3%) compared to Group A, which had rates of 12.1% and 18.2%, respectively. Although the improvement in the air-bone gap was not statistically significant, growth factor concentrate demonstrated better graft uptake and biocompatibility, suggesting it as a promising option for tympanic membrane repair.
