Effects of Gymnema Sylvestre Leaf Extract Formulation on Hair Growth Inhibition in C3H Mice

TLDR Gymnema sylvestre leaf extract can slow hair growth.
This study investigated the hair growth inhibitory effects of Gymnema sylvestre leaf extract (GSLE) on C3H mice. A 5% GSLE formulation was applied topically for 4 weeks, resulting in significantly delayed hair regrowth compared to a vehicle group. The study found increased expression of TGF-β1 and TGF-β2 and decreased β-catenin expression in the GSLE-treated groups, particularly in the 5% GSLE group. These changes suggest that GSLE inhibits hair growth by upregulating TGF-β pathways and suppressing Wnt/β-catenin signaling, disrupting the anagen phase of hair follicles. The findings provide a basis for developing natural hair growth inhibitors.
