TLDR Modified superoxide dismutase may trigger an autoimmune response in alopecia areata.
The study reported an association between hydroxyl radical (·OH)-modified superoxide dismutase (SOD) and alopecia areata (AA). It demonstrated that modifications in SOD by ·OH radicals created unique neo-epitopes, which could contribute to the induction of antibodies driven by antigens in patients with AA. This was the first report to suggest such a connection, indicating a potential mechanism for the autoimmune response observed in AA.
