TLDR Coating surgical meshes with PRP may improve hernia repair outcomes.
The review discusses advancements in surgical implant manufacturing for hernia repair and soft tissue reconstruction, emphasizing the integration of regenerative medicine techniques such as mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP). These innovations aim to enhance wound healing and tissue integration by promoting angiogenesis, reducing inflammation, and improving extracellular matrix formation. Studies in animal models and human patients show promising results, including increased neovascularization, improved tissue regeneration, and reduced hernia recurrence rates. Despite these advancements, the ideal surgical mesh design is still under exploration, and further research is needed to optimize long-term outcomes and standardize protocols.
