TLDR The IRF2BP2 gene affects sheep fleece quality by influencing fiber traits.
This study on 692 ewes across six populations explores the genetic influences on sheep fleece variation, focusing on the asEIF2S2 insertion and T7068586C locus. The asEIF2S2 insertion is linked to coat type, with single-coated breeds being homozygous for it, while double-coated breeds lack it. The T7068586C locus, polymorphic in double-coated breeds, affects fiber composition, particularly in KZK sheep, where the C allele increases non-medullated fibers. The research suggests these genetic markers could aid in marker-assisted selection for improved fleece quality. The study also identifies the IRF2BP2 gene's role, with the + +/CC genotype being optimal for desirable fiber traits, providing a framework for precision breeding. Further research is needed to validate these markers in various environments and understand the underlying molecular mechanisms.
