TLDR Current treatments for keratosis pilaris provide temporary relief, but more research is needed for better solutions.
Keratosis pilaris (KP) is a common skin disorder that poses cosmetic and psychosocial challenges due to its keratotic papules and potential erythema and dyspigmentation. This narrative review highlights the difficulties in treating KP, noting that current therapies often offer only temporary and incomplete relief. The review discusses various treatments, including topical keratolytics, retinoids, anti-inflammatory agents, and laser therapies, as well as emerging methods. It emphasizes the importance of a phenotype-directed, stepwise approach for meaningful improvement in symptoms. The review also addresses specific management strategies for keratosis pilaris rubra faciei and keratosis pilaris atrophicans, where erythema and scarring are significant concerns. Overall, while current treatments can improve symptoms, more high-quality research is needed to enhance treatment strategies and support personalized care.
