A Comparative Study Between Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy and One-Anastomosis Gastric Bypass on Serum Zinc Levels

    TLDR One-anastomosis gastric bypass leads to lower zinc levels and more symptoms than sleeve gastrectomy.
    This study compared the effects of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and one-anastomosis gastric bypass on serum zinc levels in 50 patients with severe obesity over one year. It found that patients who underwent one-anastomosis gastric bypass experienced a greater decline in serum zinc levels at 6 and 12 months postoperatively compared to those who had sleeve gastrectomy. The bypass group also showed a higher incidence of symptoms associated with low zinc levels, such as hair loss, diarrhea, and delayed wound healing. The findings suggest that one-anastomosis gastric bypass is linked to a higher risk of hypozincemia and related symptoms, highlighting the importance of routine zinc monitoring after bariatric surgery.
