TLDR Stressful life events may trigger alopecia areata.
This study investigated the relationship between life events and the onset of alopecia areata (AA) in 100 patients. Using the Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS), the study found that patients reported a median of 7 life events in the two years preceding AA onset, which is nearly double the average in lifetime population studies. Notably, 82% of patients experienced at least one strainful life event, with the most common being health loss and separation. The study highlighted that the highest strainful ratings were in the Family and Personal categories, such as major changes in a family member's health or personal injury. The findings suggest that addressing strainful life events in patients with AA could help reduce their disease burden, emphasizing the importance of considering subjective strain in clinical assessments.
