Lineage Identity and Location Within the Dermis Determine the Function of Papillary and Reticular Fibroblasts in Human Skin

    The study identified two cell surface markers, FAP and CD90, that distinguished between papillary and reticular fibroblasts in human skin. FAP + CD90 – cells, associated with papillary fibroblasts, showed increased proliferative potential and specific expression profiles, while FAP – CD90 + cells, linked to reticular fibroblasts, exhibited high levels of certain markers and underwent adipogenic differentiation. These findings confirmed the distinct lineages and functions of fibroblasts in the dermis, although their distribution was not strictly confined to specific dermal layers, suggesting that the microenvironment influenced their function.
