TLDR More research is needed on better diagnostics, survivorship, and the impact of genetic mutations in lung cancer.
The Lung Cancer Awareness Symposium highlighted key areas for research, emphasizing the need for improved diagnostic methodologies and a focus on survivorship. Experts noted the importance of obtaining sufficient tumor tissue for accurate diagnosis and genetic analysis, as current methods like blood and sputum analysis were still in the research phase. The symposium stressed the role of adjuvant therapy in improving survival rates, though significant survival benefits had not yet been documented. Survivorship issues, such as chronic fatigue and depression, were identified as areas needing attention. The symposium also addressed the relationship between smoking and genetic mutations, with a focus on EGFR mutations, which were more common in women. The need for more research on lung cancer in women and older populations was emphasized, as well as the importance of smoking cessation.
