TLDR Certain variations in the vitamin D receptor gene are linked to an increased risk of polycystic ovary syndrome.
In 2019, a meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the relationship between vitamin D receptor gene ApaI polymorphisms and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The study included 7 individual studies, with a total of 1,350 cases and 960 controls. The results showed a significant association between ApaI polymorphism and PCOS risk in all 4 genetic models. Subgroup analysis by ethnicity revealed that ApaI polymorphism was associated with the risk of PCOS in both Asians and Caucasians. However, the authors noted that due to the relatively small sample size in this meta-analysis, further studies with a larger sample size should be conducted to confirm the findings.
