TLDR Methotrexate and azathioprine are equally effective and well-tolerated for treating lichen planopilaris.
This randomized clinical trial evaluated the effectiveness of methotrexate and azathioprine in treating lichen planopilaris (LPP), involving 32 patients over six months. Both drugs significantly improved the Lichen Planopilaris Activity Index (LPPAI) and perifollicular scaling, with no significant difference between the two groups. Azathioprine showed significant improvement in perifollicular erythema, but this was not significantly different from methotrexate. Photographic assessments indicated that over 75% of patients in both groups improved. The study concludes that methotrexate and azathioprine are equally effective and well-tolerated for managing LPP.
