TLDR The gel made of minoxidil and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin improves hair growth and is good for long-term use.
Five years ago, a study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a gel formulation of minoxidil and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-ß-CD) for managing alopecia in male rats. The gel was compared to a traditional minoxidil solution. After 3 weeks, both the minoxidil solution and the minoxidil/HP-ß-CD gel enhanced hair growth by 80.1±2% and 84.3±4% respectively, compared to controls. After 4 weeks, the minoxidil/HP-ß-CD gel significantly enhanced hair length and bulb diameter compared to other groups. The gel also significantly enhanced the mRNA levels of the SUR2 and Kir6.1 subunits of the ATP-sensitive potassium channels and AKT2 compared to other groups. The AR gene was down-regulated compared to controls following treatment with either minoxidil formulations. The study concluded that the minoxidil/HP-ß-CD gel shows a favorable profile for topical long-term use.

Minoxidil alone is often insufficient for significant hair regrowth, with many users experiencing limited results or side effects, leading them to add finasteride or dutasteride for better outcomes. Some users report initial improvements with minoxidil but eventually require additional treatments to maintain or enhance hair growth.
