TLDR Liver damage in PCOS is linked to iron overload and cell death due to the miR-761-hepcidin/GPX4 pathway.
The study investigated the miR-761-hepcidin/GPX4 pathway's role in unexplained liver dysfunction in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), focusing on liver iron overload and ferroptosis. It involved 213 PCOS patients and a PCOS mouse model, revealing that miR-761 regulates hepcidin and GPX4, leading to increased iron deposition and ferroptosis, independent of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). These findings suggested that miR-761 could be a potential therapeutic target for liver dysfunction in PCOS, providing new insights into the condition's pathogenesis by emphasizing the significance of ferroptosis and iron homeostasis.
