TLDR The molecular mechanisms controlling hair growth phases are not fully understood yet.
The document reviewed the molecular biology of hair, focusing on the pilo-sebaceous unit and the hair cycle, which includes anagen (growth phase), catagen (involution phase), and telogen (resting phase). While the structure and histology of hair follicles were well understood, the molecular mechanisms controlling the hair cycle transitions were not fully elucidated. Research at the time had begun to explore the roles of growth factors like IGF-1, TGF alpha, HGF, and EGF, androgens such as 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone, cytokines like IL-1, and potassium channel openers like minoxidil. The study suggested that future discoveries would likely identify more mediators involved in hair follicle development.
