TLDR Unmarried individuals and those with diabetes have a poorer quality of life with alopecia areata.
A study conducted in three tertiary hospitals in Malaysia assessed the quality of life of 150 participants with alopecia areata (AA) using the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). The mean DLQI score was 28.9, with scores of 29 and above indicating a poor quality of life. The study found that being unmarried and having diabetes were significantly associated with a poorer quality of life. Specifically, unmarried individuals had 1.39 times higher odds, and those with diabetes had 2.99 times higher odds of experiencing a poor quality of life. These findings can aid physicians in better managing AA by considering these associated factors.
