This systematic review and meta-synthesis of 22 qualitative studies involving 990 participants examined the impact of alopecia on identity and appearance. The findings reveal that alopecia significantly affects self-confidence, body image, and social interactions, often leading to distress and avoidance behaviors. Key themes include emotional and psychological impacts, changes in identity, social functioning, and stigmatization. Participants reported a range of emotional reactions, from self-blame and loss of self-esteem to resilience and acceptance. The review underscores the need for personalized interventions and psychosocial support, highlighting the importance of social support and the varied experiences with healthcare providers. It calls for better public awareness and training for healthcare professionals to address the emotional and psychological needs of individuals with alopecia.
