TLDR Protein supplements with zinc, iron, and B vitamins reduce hair loss after sleeve gastrectomy.
This study evaluated the effects of essential amino acids, zinc, and iron supplementation on preventing early hair loss after sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) in female patients. Participants were divided into three groups: Group 1 received routine multivitamin mineral supplements, Group 2 received zinc, iron, and B vitamins in addition to routine supplements, and Group 3 received protein supplements (wheat and sesame proteins, methionine, and cysteine) along with zinc, iron, B vitamins, and routine supplements. Hair counts in the frontal area were measured before surgery and after 3 months. Results showed that Group 3 had a significant increase in hair count (from 137 to 177 hairs per cm²), compared to Groups 1 and 2, indicating that protein supplements, alongside micronutrients, were more effective in reducing hair loss post-surgery. This finding suggested that protein supplementation could be beneficial for future surgeries to mitigate hair loss.
