TLDR Dermatologists should learn trichoscopy to better diagnose hair loss conditions.
Trichoscopy was an important diagnostic tool for hair and scalp diseases, allowing for detailed visualization of structures not visible to the naked eye. It was particularly useful in identifying features of various types of alopecia, such as androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, and alopecia areata, among others. Trichoscopy helped differentiate between scarring and nonscarring alopecias by examining follicular openings and perifollicular changes. The document highlighted specific trichoscopic features for conditions like frontal fibrosing alopecia, chronic discoid lupus erythematosus, and folliculitis decalvans, emphasizing its role in early diagnosis and management of hair disorders. The effectiveness of trichoscopy depended on the dermoscope's type and resolution, as well as the immersion medium used. Overall, it was a practical and non-invasive method that enhanced the diagnosis and management of hair disorders.
