    The study explored the role of Bardet-Biedl syndrome 7 (BBS7) in maintaining periodontal ligament (PDL) homeostasis, particularly under occlusal hypofunction conditions. Researchers used RNA sequencing on 34 human teeth and found that BBS7 expression was downregulated in hypofunctional PDL, leading to changes in cell number, collagen fiber alignment, blood vessel diameter, and primary cilia appearance. BBS7 was shown to be crucial for Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling activity, which is important for PDL homeostasis. Knockdown of BBS7 resulted in suppressed cell migration and angiogenesis in vitro, underscoring its role in periodontal health. However, the specific association of each BBS family gene with occlusal force was not clearly understood.
