Blocking 11β-HSD1 reduces stress hormone damage in hair growth cells.
June 2026 in “International Journal of Dermatology Venereology and Leprosy Sciences” This case-control study conducted at Al Nasiriyah Teaching Hospital investigated the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in 75 patients with Alopecia areata (AA) compared to 75 healthy controls. The study found that 13.3% of AA patients had MetS, but this was not significantly different from the control group. However, AA patients exhibited significantly higher mean blood pressure and fasting blood sugar levels, suggesting a potential increased future risk of MetS and related metabolic disorders. No significant association was found between MetS and the duration or clinical variants of AA.
