TLDR PRP therapy may cause infections and other issues, needing more research for safety.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, used for wound healing and pain relief, has an unclear safety profile due to reports of adverse events (AEs) such as postoperative infections, blindness, inflammation, allergic reactions, and nodule development. The most common AE is postoperative infections, potentially due to microbial contamination during the blood collection, manufacturing, or administration processes, as PRP cannot be sterilized like pharmaceuticals. The specific contamination risk points are not yet identified, highlighting the need for further research to understand these risks and establish a follow-up system post-treatment. Most AE reports are case studies, indicating a need for high-quality evidence to clarify the causal relationship between PRP therapy and AEs.
