TLDR Primary cicatricial alopecia is linked to various health issues, indicating broader systemic problems.
This systematic review and meta-analysis examined 33,494 patients with primary cicatricial alopecia (PCA) and found significant associations between PCA and various comorbidities. Lichen planopilaris (LPP) was linked to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), coronary artery disease, and dermatological conditions, while frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) was associated with SLE, rheumatoid arthritis, and hypothyroidism. Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) showed strong associations with dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus. The study underscores the importance of recognizing these comorbidities for better clinical management of PCA patients, suggesting that PCA may reflect broader systemic dysregulation.
