TLDR Extracellular vesicles could revolutionize skincare by improving skin repair and anti-aging, but face regulatory and cost challenges.
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are emerging as a transformative element in the cosmetics industry due to their ability to facilitate intercellular communication and promote tissue regeneration, leading to skin repair, rejuvenation, and anti-aging effects. Human mesenchymal stem cell-derived EVs are particularly effective in enhancing collagen production and improving skin texture, but their use is currently restricted by regulatory agencies. As a result, plant- and bacterial-derived EVs are being investigated as alternatives. Despite their promising potential, challenges such as regulatory hurdles, high production costs, and product stability must be overcome to fully harness the benefits of EV-based cosmetics. The paper explores these aspects, emphasizing the significant impact EVs could have on the future of skincare products.
